Tearing out concrete is expensive and messy. If the slab is structurally sound, it can usually be ground down, repaired and recoated with a new surface that looks and feels like new.
Around pools, the right coating stays cooler underfoot and grips better when wet. On patios and walkways, a stamped overlay can mimic stone, slate, tile or wood plank in almost any color, so the same tired slab becomes a design feature.
